The basic equipment: four items every sauna needs
A sauna will work without any accessories if it has to, but it is not pleasant. Four items make up the basic equipment, and each has a clear job. The sauna bucket holds the infusion water, classically made of wood with a plastic insert that keeps the wood permanently watertight and can be removed for cleaning. The ladle doses the water onto the stones in portions; its long handle makes sure you do not have the rising steam directly above your hand. Anyone who has ever tried to pour an infusion with a cup knows why this division of labour has remained unchanged for generations. Which set suits best, from the complete kit to the plain duo, we compare in the comparison of sauna bucket sets.
The hourglass is the only clock that belongs in the sauna. Smartphones have no place at 90 degrees, and ordinary wristwatches suffer too. An hourglass with a 15-minute run time structures the sauna session without you depending on technology. The climate gauge, made up of a thermometer and hygrometer, in turn shows you what climate you are sweating in: 80 to 95 degrees with low humidity stands for the classic Finnish sauna, a milder 60 degrees with more humidity for the gentle bio climate. Without readings, both are guesswork. Which hourglasses and climate gauges are worth it, we compare in detail in the guide to hourglass and thermometer for the sauna.
In the wider sense, the basic equipment also includes the sauna stones, because without them there is neither heat storage nor infusion. They belong on or in the heater, should be explicitly infusion-proof, and should be checked every one to two years, because the rock becomes brittle over time. Which heater suits your cabin and how much stone mass it holds is covered by our sauna heater buying guide.
Textiles: sauna towel, seat towel and sauna hat
With a sauna towel, size decides the usefulness. An ordinary bath towel of 70 x 140 centimetres is enough for drying off, but not as something to lie on. On the bench you need a towel of at least 80 x 200 centimetres, so that your whole body including your feet lies on the fabric. The rule behind it is simple and mandatory in every public sauna: not a drop of sweat belongs on the wood. This discipline is worthwhile in your own cabin too, because sweat that has soaked in can hardly be sanded out of untreated wood again. Which XXL towels are worth it, we compare in the guide to the best sauna towels.
Seat towel etiquette also includes using the lying towel only for the sauna session and taking a second towel along for drying off. Two large towels per person are therefore the sensible minimum; cotton terry dries quickly and easily survives a 60-degree wash. How the complete sauna session runs from heating up to cooling down is explained in our guide How to sauna properly.
The sauna hat looks like folklore to newcomers, but it is applied physics. Hot air rises, and the head sits exactly where the temperature is highest. Wool felt insulates, keeps the scalp and hair noticeably cooler and so protects the circulation; at the same time the hair does not dry out. Especially if you love the upper bench or quickly get a red face in the heat, you will sit relaxed noticeably longer with a hat.
Comfort: headrest, backrest and colour light
After the compulsory comes the optional. A wooden headrest sounds hard, but in the lying position it supports the neck exactly where a rolled-up towel keeps slipping. Ergonomically curved models made of untreated natural wood do not get unpleasantly hot and can simply be rinsed off for cleaning. Backrests serve the same purpose when sitting: they keep your back away from the hot cabin wood and make long infusion rounds on the upper bench significantly more comfortable.
Coloured light is the transition from accessories to equipment. Many cabins come with LED coloured light from the factory, and for all the others there are retrofit lights suitable for saunas. Most people find blue light calming and red light warm and energising; you should not expect a medical effect from it, but it reliably creates atmosphere. If you are planning a garden sauna, it is best to think about lighting when you buy, rather than pulling cables through finished walls later.
Infusion in brief: fragrance belongs in the water, never on the stones
For many people the infusion is the high point of a sauna session, and it needs surprisingly little: a bucket, a ladle and a good infusion concentrate. The most important rule is also the one most often ignored: never pour concentrates neat onto the hot stones, but always add them heavily diluted to the infusion water, exactly according to the manufacturer's dosage instructions. Undiluted concentrates and unsuitable essential oils can flare up on the stones and, at that concentration, irritate the eyes and airways.
We compare in detail which fragrance directions exist, which sets are worth it and how concentrate and pure natural oil differ in our sauna infusion comparison. The technique behind it, from distributing the ladles to fanning, is shown step by step in our infusion guide.

Harvia sauna stones 20 kg
- Finnish diabase stores heat reliably and withstands regular infusions

What you can save yourself
Honesty is part of buying advice: a large share of the sauna accessories on offer is dispensable. Decorative gimmicks such as signs with sauna slogans, ornamental ladles that never see water, or scent stones without a function do not make for a better sauna session, only fuller shelves. Electronic gadgets are also mostly out of place in the cabin: speakers and displays suffer from heat and humidity, and the real appeal of the sauna lies precisely in the smartphone staying outside.
We are also sceptical about cheap thermometers whose display guesses more than it measures, and about XXL fragrance assortments if you always end up with the same eucalyptus anyway; a good set of four is then the smarter choice, and the large discovery assortment is only worthwhile for the genuinely scent-curious. Buy a few solid items instead: a decent bucket lasts decades, and a second pair of towels is more useful than any gadget. When in doubt, a simple question helps: does the item improve heat, hygiene or comfort? If not, it can stay in the shop.
Conclusion
Sauna accessories are an area where you can get a lot right on a modest budget. The basic kit of bucket, ladle, hourglass and climate gauge, plus two large towels per person and a box of infusion-proof stones: the beginning needs no more than that, and the NORDHOLZ complete set takes care of the essentials with a single purchase. After that, your ritual decides the extras: sauna hat and headrest for long sessions, coloured light for the mood, a good infusion set for the fragrance. And anything that improves neither heat nor hygiene nor comfort, you can safely ignore. That leaves money for what really carries a sauna session: calm, heat and a properly dosed infusion.
