The four towels at a glance
Opinions differ less over the sauna towel than over the heater, yet the differences in size, material weight and workmanship decide comfort and durability in everyday use. We compared four common XXL sets from the German market, all in the practical size of 80 x 200 centimetres and made of pure cotton. All details come from manufacturer and retailer pages, all ratings are editorial ratings, and how we work is explained on our About us page.

Why 80 x 200 centimetres is the right size
With a sauna towel, size above all decides how useful it is. A normal shower towel of 70 x 140 centimetres is enough for drying off, but as a base on the bench it is simply too short. As soon as you lie down, your calves and feet stick out beyond the fabric, and that is exactly where the sweat lands on the wood. The XXL size of 80 x 200 centimetres solves this problem: over two metres of length, the whole body including the feet lies on the towel, and the 80 centimetres of width leave enough room even on wider benches.
Behind this is the most important rule of sauna hygiene, mandatory in every public sauna and just as sensible at home: not a drop of sweat belongs directly on the wood. Sweat that has soaked in can hardly be sanded out of untreated bench wood again, it leaves marks and in the long run encourages mould spots. A full-length towel therefore protects not just etiquette but the bench itself. How the complete sauna session runs, from heating up through the infusion to cooling down, and where the seat towel comes into play, is explained in our guide Using a sauna correctly.
If you have a large bench in your own cabin or in the barrel sauna in the garden, you notice the difference immediately: the long towel stays in place when you turn over instead of constantly slipping, and a second towel stays clean for drying off. Shorter formats, by contrast, force constant readjusting, which nobody wants in the heat.
Cotton, terry and material quality
As for material, there is hardly any way around pure cotton in the sauna. It absorbs moisture well, feels pleasant even when warm and withstands the hot wash that is necessary after sweating. Blended fabrics with a high synthetic fibre content dry faster, but absorb less well and can feel unpleasant on heated skin. All four towels in this comparison are made of 100 percent cotton according to the supplier, the BaSaTex set expressly of terry.
Terry is the classic towel fabric with the small loops that enlarge the surface and thus the absorbency. The denser and heavier the terry, the fluffier and more absorbent it feels, but the longer it also takes to dry. This is exactly where the trade-off lies: the quick-drying Komfortec set scores with a short drying time, while a heavy luxury terry from specialist retailers feels richer. For most home saunas, a solid medium weight is the best compromise.
A quality signal that goes beyond mere feel is screening for harmful substances. According to the manufacturer, the BaSaTex set carries the Öko-Tex Made in Green label, which marks goods screened for harmful substances from more environmentally and socially compatible production. Especially with textiles that lie directly on the skin and are regularly washed hot, this is an understandable plus. What remains binding, however, is always the manufacturer's current certification, not our reproduction of it.
How many towels you need
A single towel is never enough in the sauna, and there is a good reason for that. Etiquette calls for using the sauna towel solely as a cover for the bench and keeping a second, dry towel ready for drying off after cooling down. If you do both with the same towel, you end up lying on damp, cooled-down fabric. Two large towels per person are therefore the sensible minimum, and that is exactly why BaSaTex, Utopia and Komfortec sell their sauna towels in twin packs.
If you regularly use the sauna as a pair, have guests over or simply do not want to do laundry after every session, it is better to plan for a small stock of freshly washed towels. Four to six in rotation ensure there is always a dry towel ready while the others are in the wash or on the line. The colourful Betz towel comes as a single piece, but combines well with a twin pack if you want to add some colour. Which other items belong in the basic kit and what you can do without is covered honestly in our accessories buying guide.
Washing and caring for sauna towels properly
For a sauna towel to stay absorbent for a long time, the right wash matters more than the price. Pure cotton towels can usually take 60 degrees, and this temperature also makes sense because it reliably removes sweat and germs. If in doubt, check the care label, especially on colourful models such as the Betz towel, so the colours stay vivid for a long time. It is best to wash new towels separately before first use, as they initially shed lint and sometimes a little dye.
The most important care tip is also the one most often ignored: leave out the fabric softener. It coats the cotton fibres like a film and makes the towel soft in the short term, but it reduces exactly the absorbency that matters in a sauna towel. If you dry the towels thoroughly after washing and do not leave them lying damp in the basket, you also prevent mildew spots and mustiness. You will find the same principle of airing and drying that protects the cabin itself in our guide to sauna care and cleaning. That way good towels last many sauna years, without any expensive special products.
Which towel suits whom
The short decision guide from the editorial team: if you value assessed material quality, choose the BaSaTex set with the Öko-Tex label. For a solid, inexpensive standard in grey or white, the Utopia twin pack is the right choice, and if you use the sauna often and at short intervals, you will appreciate the quick-drying Komfortec set. The colourful Betz towel is for anyone who wants one towel for sauna, bathroom and beach at the same time and likes colour. All four cover the crucial XXL size, and the rest comes down to budget, colour and how often the washing machine runs.
Once the towel is sorted, all that is missing for a complete kit is the right infusion equipment: we compare a watertight bucket and a long-handled ladle in our guide to sauna buckets and ladles, and the infusion-proof stones for the heater in our comparison of sauna stones. If you are only just planning your cabin, you will find the basics in our home sauna buying guide.
Conclusion
Sauna towels are inexpensive items with a clear function, and the most important decision is the simplest one: choose the large size. With 80 x 200 centimetres of pure cotton, you lie entirely on the fabric, protect the bench and are on the safe side in any public sauna. For the best material quality, the Öko-Tex certified BaSaTex set is our recommendation, Utopia and Komfortec cover the solid standard, and the Betz towel brings colour and versatility. Plan for two towels per person, wash at 60 degrees without fabric softener, and your sauna towel will accompany you through many years of infusions.
