The garden saunas in detail

Home Deluxe Lahti L barrel sauna
- Barrel, sauna heater and accessories come as a matched set, which saves you searching for a heater and worrying about compatibility
- Honestly rated by the manufacturer for four people, with two opposing benches
- Home Deluxe is an established provider in the infrared and home sauna sector in German-speaking countries
- A round barrel with a smaller air volume heats up faster than a house of the same size
- Four adults sit tightly in the compact barrel; for regularly full sessions, take a look at the longer models

Karibu barrel sauna set 299 cm
- A barrel length of almost three metres gives four people noticeably more leg and elbow room than the compact barrels
- Complete set with 9 kW heater including integrated control unit, connection cable and roof shingles
- Karibu is one of the most established German providers of garden and outdoor saunas
- The 9 kW heater requires a 400-volt connection, so a qualified electrician needs to be part of the budget

Karibu garden sauna with anteroom
- An anteroom as a wind-sheltered changing area and storage space: this is what makes winter use with several people really comfortable
- Two loungers and, according to the manufacturer, room for two to four people with full headroom
- A 9 kW heater with external control unit is included in the set, and the bronze-tinted glass door looks high-quality
- At 396 x 225 centimetres, the house needs serious space and a correspondingly large foundation

Karibu MELO 3 sauna house complete set
- Complete set with 9 kW heater and 18 kilograms of sauna stones; only the power connection is missing
- 38 millimetre solid wall planks store heat and withstand the humidity changes of year-round use
- Vertical walls make better use of the floor area than a barrel and give full headroom on both benches
- As a compact house it is tight for four adults, ideal for two to three plus an occasional fourth guest

FinnTherm Mini S barrel sauna
- A wall thickness of 42 millimetres is above the common barrel standard of 40 millimetres and stores heat slightly better
- Safety glass door, roof shingles and mounting material are included in the scope of delivery
- At 220 centimetres long, the barrel offers two full-size benches for four people
- Without heater: you choose and budget for the sauna heater, stones and control unit separately

Karibu barrel sauna set 389 cm
- Almost four metres of barrel length leave room for a generous seating group and often a small anteroom
- Complete set with 9 kW heater, integrated control unit, cable and shingles
- Room to spare if four or more people regularly use the sauna together
- Needs a lot of floor space and a long, load-bearing foundation; quickly too big for small gardens
Barrel or house: which suits four people better
The first fundamental question for a garden sauna for 4 people is the design. The barrel sauna heats up faster thanks to its round, smaller air volume, weighs less, often manages with a smaller foundation and is the undisputed eye-catcher in the garden. Its drawback: the curve wastes space exactly where four heads come together, and in the upper curve the air gets hottest without you being able to sit up comfortably there. The sauna house turns the equation around: vertical walls, full headroom on both benches and a floor plan that can be furnished sensibly, plus, with larger models, an anteroom as a changing area and storage space. In return it needs more heating time, more floor area and usually a sturdier foundation. Our garden sauna buying guide compares both designs in principle, the barrel sauna comparison goes deeper into the pure barrel selection and the sauna house comparison covers the house side.
How much space four people really need
Manufacturer figures for the number of people are calculated optimistically, and that goes doubly for garden saunas. In practice, four people means: two people lie or sit on each side, or all four sit upright on two opposing benches. For that to work without knee-to-knee contact, a barrel should be at least around 190 to 220 centimetres long inside, and a house should offer roughly two by two metres of interior space. At around 189 centimetres, the compact Lahti L is an honest four-person sauna for families, one in which you get closer to each other; anyone who wants to use the sauna regularly with four adults and infusions will be noticeably more relaxed with the 299-centimetre barrel or the house with anteroom. Our advice, drawn from many reader questions: plan one size more generously, because the sauna is usually used by more people than you thought when buying. If you are unsure, our Sauna Finder will lead you to the right size in a few questions.
Heater, three-phase power and foundation
A garden sauna for four people is a small construction project, not a piece of furniture. For the heater, at this size there is hardly any way around roughly 9 kW, and that means 400 volts of three-phase power. The connection is run via an underground cable from the house connection to the sauna and must be done by a qualified electrician, cable and trench included. Include these costs in your calculation from the start, as they are missing from many set prices. Which heater output suits which cabin volume is worked out in our guide Sauna heater: how many kW. The second job is the base: level, load-bearing and permanently dry, depending on the ground as a concrete slab, strip foundation or paving slabs on compacted gravel, with a capillary-breaking build-up against rising damp. You will find stones, ladle and infusion concentrate in the accessories section, and what running it costs is shown in our article on sauna power consumption.
Planning permission: ask first, then build
The uncomfortable truth first: whether your garden sauna needs planning permission is decided not by the retailer but by the state building code of your federal state together with the local development plan. In many places, small outbuildings are exempt from the approval procedure up to a certain number of cubic metres, but a heated building with a fireplace is sometimes assessed more strictly than a tool shed, and distance requirements to the neighbouring property almost always apply. Models for four people in particular, with their volume, often lie closer to the critical limits than a small solo sauna. Our advice: before ordering, call the building authority with a floor plan and a site sketch; it costs nothing and spares you expensive demolition. We have summarised the typical rules, exemption limits and pitfalls in our guide Garden sauna and planning permission.
Which model suits whom
The short decision aid from the editorial team: anyone who wants a coherent overall package without searching for a heater and has the family in mind takes the Home Deluxe Lahti L, where barrel, heater and accessories fit together from the factory. If comfortable year-round use with four people is the priority, the Karibu garden sauna with anteroom is the most relaxed solution; its two loungers and the anteroom make the difference in winter. Anyone who likes the house design but wants to build more compactly goes for the MELO 3 complete set. If you need more legroom in a barrel, the 299-centimetre barrel is the sweet spot, and for large groups there is the 389-centimetre set. Tech-savvy do-it-yourselfers who appreciate thicker walls choose the FinnTherm Mini S and put the heater and control unit together themselves. If four people ultimately seems too ambitious, it is also worth a look at the smaller barrels in the barrel sauna comparison.
How we assessed
Our editorial rating weights four criteria: the substance of wall thickness, wood quality and construction, the heater package including control unit, the equipment from doors to benches to anteroom, and everyday practicality from assembly, real space and running costs. The basis is manufacturer and retailer information as well as documented user experiences, not our own assembly on the editorial plot, and that is exactly how we label it. You will not find invented measurements or fantasy prices here, and our editorial team stands behind that. Price classes instead of daily prices: for garden saunas, mid-range means a mid four-figure range, and the premium class goes beyond that. The price in the linked shop is always the one that counts.
Conclusion
A garden sauna for four people is a long-term decision, so it pays to follow the right order: first clarify the building authority and electricity questions, then measure the foundation and space honestly, then choose a model. The Lahti L takes most of the decisions off families' hands, while the Karibu with anteroom rewards everyone who also wants to use the sauna as a foursome in January. Be realistic: barrel or house, electrics, foundation and accessories together make up the real budget. But then you have a place in the garden where four people can switch off together in every season. If you are still undecided between an indoor and an outdoor sauna, the home sauna buying guide covers the alternative for inside the house.
